Steve Nash, who was in his first season as Nets head coach, finishes with a 28-23 record. The Nets made the playoffs this season for the first time since 2015, but were eliminated in the first round by Milwaukee.
Brooklyn will now begin searching for a new head coach. Nash was hired last September after serving as a player development consultant with the Golden State Warriors.
It’s unclear what led to the Nets’ decision to fire Nash, but it’s likely that they feel they need someone with more experience to lead the team moving forward. Nash is a Hall of Famer and two-time MVP, but he was never able to get the Nets over the hump in the playoffs.
“I leave this situation with a lot of mixed emotions. I am incredibly proud of our players and staff for working so hard every single day to make this season successful.”
“I have learned a great deal from Steve Nash as both a player and coach,” Marks said in a statement. “His approach, leadership and mentorship have been an invaluable asset to our organization and will continue to be so as he transitions into a new role with the Nets.”
Nash was hired in September, less than three weeks before the start of training camp, and took over a team that had gone 21-45 the previous season. The Nets were expected to be one of the worst teams in the league again, but they turned out to be one of the biggest surprises.
They started the season 11-4 and were in fourth place in the Eastern Conference at 20-12 when Nash was named Coach of the Month for December. The Nets had their best month in nearly four years, winning 10 of 12 games.
The Nets are one of the most talented teams in the NBA, and they have aspirations of winning a championship. They’ll need to find the right coach to help them reach that goal.
