Zappe, an undrafted rookie out of Houston Baptist, made his NFL debut in the fourth quarter of New England’s 38-9 win over the Raiders. And while he didn’t do much on the field, his one contribution – a five-yard touchdown pass to Devin Asiasi – was enough to make headlines.

That’s because it was a controversial touchdown. The play in question came with just over two minutes remaining and the Patriots leading by 29 points. Zappe dropped back to pass and found Asiasi open in the back of the end zone for an easy score.

However, many NFL fans – including some commentators – felt that Zappe’s touchdown was unnecessary and unsportsmanlike. Some even called for the NFL to review the play and potentially penalize the Patriots for running up the score.

And he did so admirably, orchestrating a come-from-behind victory by throwing for three touchdowns and running for another. But it was his first touchdown pass that caused the most controversy.

Zappe lofted a perfect pass to N’Keal Harry in the back of the end zone, but officials ruled that Harry had not established himself as a receiver before going out of bounds. The ruling was reviewed and upheld, much to the chagrin of Patriots fans. But it was the correct call according to the NFL’s rules.

In order to be considered a receiver, a player must have two feet down inbounds before the ball arrives. Harry clearly only had one foot down, so the touchdown was correctly ruled as an incompletion.

It was a disappointing moment for Zappe and the Patriots, but it was the right call according to the NFL’s rules.
