The Bruins have been without Marchand, their leading scorer from last year, for the first nine games of the season. The 34-year-old had career highs in goals (34), assists (46) and points (80) last season, his eighth with the Bruins.

Marchand underwent successful surgery on his left hip in early May and has been skating with the team during practice for the past few weeks. Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said Marchand is close to returning to game action and could be back in the lineup as early as next week.

“He’s working his way back,” Cassidy said of Marchand. “I think he’s close. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow. I would say by the end of next week, he should be back in the lineup.”

The Bruins have managed to stay afloat without Marchand, going 5-3-1 in his absence. They will look to continue their winning ways when they take on the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. Marchand had surgery on his right elbow on June 25th and was originally expected to miss six to eight weeks of action.

Montgomery said that Marchand is currently working on regaining the range of motion in his elbow and that he has not started skating yet.

The coach added that there is no timetable for Marchand’s return to the lineup, but that he is hopeful the winger will be ready for the start of the regular season. Marchand is coming off a career-year in which he tallied 100 points (36 goals, 64 assists) in 79 games.

The Bruins have depth at forward and will be able to weather the storm without Marchand for a little while, but they will need him back at full strength if they want to make a deep playoff run.

We will continue to update Marchand’s status as more information becomes available. Welcome back, Brad! We can’t wait to see you back on the ice.
