The conclussion on Tua Tagovailoa’s situation
The biggest one, of course, is whether he’ll be able to play again this season. Tagovailoa suffered a displaced posterior wall fracture in his right hip when he was hit by Houston Texans defensive end Yannick Ngakoue in the second quarter of Sunday’s 26-25 win over the Texans.
He underwent surgery on Monday and is now recovering at a hospital in Houston. The Dolphins have not released any update on Tagovailoa’s condition since he was taken to the hospital, but head coach Brian Flores said on Monday that the plan is for him to return to Miami this week.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Tua and his family,” Flores said. “He’s a tremendous young man, he’s been through a lot in his life. He works extremely hard, he’s very meticulous, he takes great care of himself, he’s a great teammate. So, we’re thinking about Tua.”
While the Dolphins have not said anything about Tagovailoa’s future, it is worth noting that the team did trade for veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick earlier this season.
Fitzpatrick has started eight games for the Dolphins this season and has been solid, throwing for 2,091 yards and 13 touchdowns with five interceptions. So far this season, Tagovailoa has thrown for 493 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions. He has also rushed for one touchdown.
Flores said on Monday that the team is still gathering information on Tagovailoa’s injury and that they will have a better idea of his status in the coming days. “I think right now we’re just focused on Tua and his family and making sure he’s doing everything he can to recovery,” Flores said. “We’ll see where that takes us.”
The bottom line is that Tagovailoa’s future is very much up in the air at this point. The Dolphins will have to wait and see how he progresses in his recovery before making any decisions about his status for the rest of the season.
