Shapovalov has approached to the third round of the US Open
It was a tidy performance from the Canadian, who continues to impress at this year’s US Open. Shapovalov has now reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
This is the first time Shapovalov, who is seeded 12th at this year’s tournament, has made it to the third round of the U.S. Open.
The 20-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., had 28 winners and three aces in the match that lasted just over two hours. He will face Hungarian Marton Fucsovics for a spot in the round of 16. The two have never played each other before.
Shapovalov is the highest-ranked Canadian man in history and is currently ranked No. 11 in the world. He has been on a tear this summer, reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon and the Rogers Cup.
At just 20 years old, Shapovalov is already one of the most promising young players on the ATP Tour. With another strong showing at the US Open, he could continue to rise up the rankings and establish himself as a legitimate threat on the biggest stages in tennis.
This is Shapovalov’s fourth consecutive appearance in the third round of a Grand Slam. He made it to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon this year before losing in five sets to Rafa Nadal.
At the US Open last year, Shapovalov was one win away from the quarter-finals before losing to Kyle Edmund in the Round of 16.
