Phil Mickelson hopes he will play the Masters despite LIV Golf involvement
Speaking at the Hero World Challenge, Phil Mickelson said he has been in touch with Augusta National officials and they have assured him that his participation in the LIV Golf event will not jeopardize his status as a Masters competitor.
“I’m going to play the Masters,” Mickelson said. “I’ve spoken to Fred Ridley and we’re on the same page. I will be eligible to play.”
Mickelson’s involvement with LIV Golf has been heavily criticized, with many believing that the event does not meet the standards of a traditional golf tournament. However, Mickelson is adamant that he will be able to compete at Augusta next year.
“I don’t think it’s going to be an issue,” Mickelson said Tuesday. “I hope to play. I’ve already spoken to the powers that be at Augusta, and they’re fully aware of the situation. I don’t think it will affect my ability to play the Masters.”
Mickelson is one of many high-profile golfers who have signed on to play in the LIV Golf World Series, which is set to debut next month. The league has faced criticism for its ties to Saudi Arabia, which has been accused of human rights violations.
Mickelson said he was “surprised” by the backlash to the league.
“I understand there’s a lot of sensitivities and a lot of people that are upset about different things that have gone on in Saudi Arabia,” he said. “But I hope that through the game of golf and through this event, we’re able to kind of bridge some gaps and help change some perceptions and allow people to maybe see Saudi Arabia in a different light.”
Mickelson is scheduled to play in the Saudi International tournament this week. He said he understands why some people are critical of him and other golfers who are playing in Saudi Arabia, but he hopes that the LIV Golf World Series can help improve relations between Saudi Arabia and the rest of the world.
“I understand there are some people who don’t think LIV Golf is a proper golf tournament,” Mickelson said. “But I disagree. I think it’s a great event and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
The Masters is scheduled for the next April, 2023. Phil Mickelson will be eligible to compete.
