Gausman (4-0) scattered the hits over six innings and had eight strikeouts in by far his best start since being acquired from Atlanta on July 31. He also hit an RBI single off starter Luis Severino (15-6), who gave up four runs – three earned – and eight hits in six innings. The Blue Jays used a three-run third to take control.

Teoscar Hernandez hit a leadoff single, Yangervis Solarte walked and Gausman drove in the game’s first run with a soft grounder past third baseman Miguel Andujar. Kevin Pillar followed with an RBI double and Devon Travis had an RBI groundout.

The Blue Jays have won seven of 10. The Yankees had their three-game winning streak snapped and failed to gain ground on AL West-leading Houston, which lost 14-1 at Oakland.

New York’s best chance against Gausman came in the sixth. Gary Sanchez led off with a single, Greg Bird walked and Andujar reached on an infield hit with one out to load the bases. Gausman, though, got Giancarlo Stanton on a flyout and Aaron Hicks grounded out.

Seunghwan Oh worked the seventh and Tyler Clippard pitched the eighth before Ken Giles finished for his 15th save in 16 chances. Blue Jays relievers have not allowed a run in 19 innings.

Gausman has been excellent since being traded to Toronto, going 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA in five starts. The Blue Jays acquired him from the Braves for prospects Kevin Smith and Sean Reid-Foley.

He gave up two hits over seven innings in a 4-1 win at Tampa Bay on Aug. 5, then beat the Yankees 3-2 last Saturday at Yankee Stadium. Gausman has allowed one run in 15 innings while winning both of his starts against New York this season.

Gausman (4-0) was in complete command, striking out eight while walking two and allowing just two hits over six innings. The right-hander has now won four consecutive starts, surrendering a total of just three earned runs over that span.

The Blue Jays offense did just enough to support Gausman, scratching out a run in the first inning when Cavan Biggio drew a bases-loaded walk. Toronto then added three more runs in the seventh, with Bo Bichette and Randal Grichuk coming through with RBI hits.

With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 8-2 on the season, while the Yankees fell to 5-6. New York will look to get back on track Saturday when they send Gerrit Cole to the mound opposite Toronto’s Chase Anderson.
