The team has struggled to a 5-8-0 start and currently sit in last place in the Pacific Division. The Canucks have been beset by injuries, with key players like Brock Boeser, Jacob Markstrom, Elias Pettersson, Tyler Toffoli and Chris Tanev all missing time.
GM Jim Rutherford recently spoke about the team’s situation, saying “something has to be fixed”. The Canucks have already made a few changes, firing head coach Travis Green and replacing him with interim head coach Noureen DeWulf.
The team has also sent underperforming forwards Tim Schaller and Zack MacEwen to the AHL. It remains to be seen what else Rutherford will do, but it’s clear that he is not happy with the way things are going in Vancouver right now.
“I don’t think it’s just one thing. The power play has got to be better. The 5-on-5 play has to be better. The goaltending, when you look at the numbers, it’s not as bad as maybe people think, but we need to be better in that area, too.”, – Rutherford told The Athletic.
Rutherford is currently in his first season as the Canucks’ general manager, and he inherited a team that is in the midst of a rebuild. The Canucks are not expected to be contenders for the Stanley Cup this season, but Rutherford is clearly not happy with the team’s performance so far.
The Canucks will need to turn things around quickly if they want to make the playoffs this season. They currently sit seven points back of the Anaheim Ducks for the final playoff spot in the Pacific Division.
The good news for Vancouver is that they have a lot of games remaining against divisional opponents. If they can take advantage of that, they might be able to make a run at a playoff spot. But it’s going to be an uphill battle for the Canucks this season.
