Jays win Orioles with the help of Bo Bichette
Bichette connected off Asher Wojciechowski in the first, third and fifth innings. The 22-year-old son of former major league slugger Dante Bichette became the second Jays player to homer three times in a game this season, joining Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
Bichette is the first major league player with three homers and four hits in a game since Mookie Betts did it for the Boston Red Sox against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 10, 2018. Bo Bichette joined his dad, Dante, as the only father-son combo in MLB history with a 3-homer game.
The Jays have won five straight and 11 of 13. They increased their lead to two games over the Chicago White Sox for the final AL playoff berth.
Toronto’s Hyun Jin Ryu (5-2) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings in the opener, a 5-2 victory. In the nightcap, Jays starter Chase Anderson gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings.
Baltimore has lost eight straight and 19 of 20. The Orioles have the worst record in the majors at 20-49. They were swept in a doubleheader for the first time since June 17, 2017, against the New York Yankees.
In the opener, Baltimore’s Jose Iglesias had an RBI single in the third and a run-scoring grounder in the fifth. Bichette also singled in the ninth and finished with four hits. It was his first career four-hit game.
The Jays have won six of their last seven games to improve to 18-18. They are 4 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for second place in the AL East and the final playoff spot.
Baltimore has lost eight of 10 to drop to 14-22. The Orioles are in last place in the division, 8 1/2 games behind the Rays. Bo Bichette extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games with a single in the first inning. He has homered in three straight games.
