How long will football be cancelled for?

Football fixtures in England have been postponed on previous occasions for national mourning, including the deaths of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Football Association said it was “entirely appropriate” that all professional football in England be suspended this weekend. The Premier League, English Football League (EFL) and Women’s Super League (WSL) have all agreed to the postponement of their matches.

Football in England has been suspended for a total of seven days across three weekends this season due to the latets news. The Premier League said it “fully respects” the decision to postpone games, while the EFL described it as a “mark of respect to the nation”.

It is not yet clear when football will resume in England, but it is unlikely to be before Monday, October 19. The next round of Premier League fixtures is currently scheduled for the weekend of October 17-18.

Champions League and Europa League matches are also due to take place that weekend. Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said the organisation is in “close dialogue” with the government and football bodies about when the game can return.

“Our thoughts are with the royal family and we send our sincere condolences to them,” he said. “We will continue to work closely with the government and all our stakeholders to establish when it is appropriate for football to return.”

Bullingham said the FA is “fully supportive” of the decision to postpone matches this weekend. “The health and wellbeing of everyone involved in the game is always our priority,” he said.

The Premier League said it “understands and fully respects” the decision to postpone games. “The thoughts of everyone at the Premier League are with Her Majesty The Queen and the royal family,” a statement said.

“We will continue to liaise with the FA and government and provide updates in due course.”

The EFL said it is “fully supportive” of the decision to postpone matches, adding that its thoughts are with the royal family.
