Ronaldo’s penalty in the second half was enough to secure the victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who remain unbeaten in the Premier League since losing to Arsenal on New Year’s Day. Everton had taken the lead in the first half through an Richarlison header but United hit back after the break through goals from Anthony Martial and Ronaldo.

The victory takes United back to within two points of Everton in the table, with both teams now on 44 points. Everton remain in seventh place, while United move up to fifth.

It was a tight game at Goodison Park, with Everton enjoying the better of the early chances. United grew into the game as the first half wore on and had a couple of good opportunities of their own, but it was Everton who took the lead in the 29th minute.

Richarlison met a cross from Lucas Digne and powered a header past David de Gea to give Everton the lead. United pushed for an equaliser in the second half and were rewarded in the 66th minute when Martial scored his 12th goal of the season.

The Frenchman picked up the ball on the left wing and cut inside before firing a low shot past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Ronaldo then scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 80th minute after Everton defender Yerry Mina was adjudged to have brought down Marcus Rashford in the box.

It was Ronaldo’s 27th goal of the season for United and his 28th in all competitions, meaning he has now reached double figures for goals in 11 consecutive seasons.

The victory was United’s fifth in a row in all competitions and they will now turn their attentions to their Europa League last-16 first leg tie against LASK on Thursday. Everton, meanwhile, host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
